STRMOL CASTLE GUIDED TOURS

Of the twelve medieval castles in the area of today's Cerkljan municipality, Strmol Castle is the only one that has survived to this day. Today, if we drive along the road that connects the villages of Česnjevek and Dvorje, we can see its magnificent image under the slope of the forest Cerklje. According to its origin, it belongs to

the oldest castles around. It is mentioned in written sources for the first time in 1287. Its owner was the knight Verijand Strmolski, who owned the castle until the 15th century, after which the owners changed, among the last was the industrialist Rado Hribar from Ljubljana.

Under the castle there used to be a pond with a drawbridge, which was a shield against the incursions of the Turks, but today there is an artificially designed lake under it. The castle is well-preserved, and the park is a well-preserved and extremely picturesque whole, located at the foot of Dvorjanski Hrib. The castle houses a rich collection of historical furniture, paintings and other antiques. The park is equipped with a fountain and baroque plastic, brought from the former castle of Zalog pri Moravčah.

The story of the last private owners, Rado and Ksenija Hribar, gives the castle a special stamp. Rado Hribar came from the well-known Ljubljana family of the industrialist, printer, politician and Slavophile Dragotin Hribar, while his mother, Evgenija, came from a bourgeois family of confectionery manufacturers, Šumi. They say that Ksenija was the granddaughter of the richest Slovenian, Josip Gorup, but she was certainly a woman who exceeded the norms of the time; she piloted a plane, and her pet was a real crocodile... The fate of the Hribar couple was revealed only in 2015, 77 years after their brutal murder, when their remains were dug up in the village above Preddvor. The last years of their not-so-ordinary life were convincingly described by Drago Jančar in the novel To noč sem jo videl.
