Set off on the Fish Adventure and, through play, discover the world of local waters, fish farming and fish cuisine.
The Fish Adventure is an interactive themed trail around Cerklje na Gorenjskem that links the area's natural and cultural heritage with stories about fish, fish farming and local food. Along the trail, which is about 14 kilometres long, six digital points await you, where you learn in a fun and interactive way about the journey of fish from nature to the table.
Six points, six stories
Each of the six points tells its own story, linked to the location, the natural features of the area and the importance of fishing, fish farming and fish cuisine.
Exploring is not limited to reading. At some of the points, quizzes, riddles and mini-games with augmented reality elements await you, while photographs, illustrations and audio recordings round out the stories.
Each point works on its own, so there is no need to visit them in a particular order. You can choose to do the whole Fish Adventure or visit just some of the points.
Best explored by bike
You can explore the trail, which is about 14 kilometres long, in various ways, but in good weather we recommend going by bike.
The Fish Adventure thus combines outdoor exercise with discovering the local environment and interactive learning. It is intended for locals and visitors alike, and is also of interest to families with children and school groups.
From fish farmer to plate
The Fish Adventure also brings visitors closer to the story of locally farmed fish – from the water and fish farming to their role in a healthy, local diet.
The trail was created as part of the Educational Fish Adventure: From Nature to Table project, which brings together fish farming, cuisine, education, sustainable mobility and tourism. The project partners are Jezeršek gostinstvo, the Cerklje Tourism Board, KGZS – Zavod Kranj and Vodomec.

The aim of the project “Educational Fish Adventure: from nature to the table” is to help overcome the identified challenges in the sustainable development of the food system and the low awareness of the importance of fish farming in the area of the LAS Gorenjske ribe local action group, and to make use of the development opportunities offered by local aquaculture. The project is delivered in partnership by four formal and several informal partners who bring key knowledge, competences and experience. Its main impact is to improve understanding and consumption of healthy, local fish among residents, with a particular focus on vulnerable target groups, while also strengthening the potential for local economic development and creating new opportunities along the entire chain, from the fish farmer to the consumer’s plate.
Project objectives
- Promoting a healthy lifestyle among various target groups
- Developing entrepreneurial skills among young people and fish farmers, and creating a new job
- Raising environmental awareness and encouraging sustainable behaviour, and promoting fish dishes
Project activities
- Management, coordination and promotion of the project, and regular communication with partners, target groups and the general public on the progress and results of the operation in the LAS Gorenjske ribe area;
- Development, testing and refinement of new fish dishes and products based on local fish and the tastes of the target groups, involving master chefs and nutritionists, and compilation of a recipe collection for local communities and institutions;
- Upgrading and extending the infrastructure for the long-term development of fish-based nutrition, including modernisation of the learning centre, kitchen equipment, IT technologies and digital content for running practical workshops and training sessions;
- Development and pilot implementation of the digital circular learning trail “Fish Adventure” around local water sources, with interactive content for primary school pupils, teachers and other visitors, as well as supporting information materials;
- Development and delivery of an educational and awareness-raising programme for children, young people and other vulnerable groups, focusing on healthy eating habits and the importance of local fish in the diet, aquaculture and fish farming;
- Development and delivery of a professional programme for fish farmers in the LAS Gorenjske ribe area, focusing on sustainable fish farming, new technologies, fish marketing and the exchange of best practice among experts;
- Development and delivery of a programme of cookery workshops for various target groups (families, women, older people), focusing on preparing healthy fish dishes, hands-on learning and encouraging regular inclusion of fish in the diet;
- Creation and upgrading of digital content (video recipes, interactive learning materials, e-materials) to support the educational programmes and promote local fish on websites and social media;
- Creation of a new job for developing and coordinating digital content and supporting the delivery of the project’s educational, promotional and partnership activities;
- Calculation of the carbon footprint of fish dishes and of the digital circular learning trail, and preparation of recommendations for reducing environmental impacts and strengthening sustainable practices in fish farming and cookery;
- Evaluation, reporting and consolidation of the project results, including preparation of the final report, knowledge transfer among stakeholders and planning of further activities and cooperation after the operation ends;
- Organisation of an opening and a closing event to present the project’s objectives, progress and key results to the general public, local communities and professional stakeholders.
Project results
- Developing a sustainable food system: Raising awareness of the importance of aquaculture, sustainable fish farming and healthy eating (development of new fish dishes, recipes, etc.), which will help increase local production and contribute to sustainable development in the local community.
- Promotion of and added value for fish dishes: Promoting fish dishes and introducing innovative culinary approaches using fresh fish and local ingredients, which will strengthen market opportunities and improve the competitiveness of local producers.
- Expansion and modernisation of the learning centre: Expanding the learning centre for preparing fish dishes will make modern cookery workshops and digital content possible, with the aim of providing high-quality, effective education and actively involving various target groups.
- Healthy lifestyle: Promoting a healthy lifestyle through educational learning trails (discovering the life cycle of a fish from nature to the table) and encouraging environmentally friendly practices, including the use of e-bikes. This will help promote sustainable mobility and active leisure time in nature, which is essential for the health and wellbeing of the community and for reducing the carbon footprint.
- Preserving jobs and creating a new one: With the aim of encouraging employment, improving residents’ knowledge and skills, and increasing the use of local resources. Synergies with previous projects will be achieved through cooperation with existing partners and the involvement of new stakeholders. The project’s added value will be reflected in an improved quality of life, greater awareness of sustainable development and a stronger local economy.
