Support for Slovenian Food Week
With the brochure
“Recipes with the Flavours of Slovenia”, the professional organisations of beekeepers, farmers and cooperatives
invite you to support the initiative to mark
SLOVENIAN FOOD WEEK.
In Slovenia, SLOVENIAN FOOD DAY has traditionally been held every third Friday in November – it is better known as Traditional Slovenian Breakfast Day. But what if, instead of a single day, we had a whole SLOVENIAN FOOD WEEK?
Slovenian Food Week, running from 13 to 19 November 2023, would encourage everyone to include traditional Slovenian dishes made from local ingredients in their menus. Every meal should reflect the diversity and richness of Slovenia’s agricultural produce and forests, because only by joining forces can we preserve the countryside and biodiversity and build a healthy future for all. Slovenian Food Week would thus encourage people to choose local produce, a healthy lifestyle and the preservation of culinary heritage.
Prepare meals such as breakfast, dinner and snacks from produce and foods of Slovenian origin. Bake bread at home and enjoy it for breakfast with butter and honey, along with a cup of milk and a juicy apple. Look for produce and foods of Slovenian origin from beekeepers, farmers and their cooperatives.
In shops, look out for the “origin Slovenia” label and the “selected quality – Slovenia” label, which guarantee that products were grown and processed in Slovenia.
Here are a few recipes for traditional Slovenian dishes:
ISTRIAN BOBIČI (bean and maize soup) and tarragon swirl with honey
MATEVŽ (bean and potato mash), roast sausage, braised sauerkraut and pear
VEGETABLE BARLEY STEW (JEŠPRENJ), baked apples with walnuts and honey
PREŽGANKA (toasted flour soup), millet porridge with fruit and honey
AJMOHT (ragout) with buckwheat žganci (spoon dumplings)
LAMB’S LETTUCE WITH EGGS
BUCKWHEAT BREAD WITH WALNUTS
Enjoy your meal!
The aim of the project is to bring all stakeholders together in a sustainable and responsible local food chain from field to plate for the benefit of all.
May every bite reflect the richness and diversity of Slovenia’s fields and gardens, orchards, vineyards, meadows, pastures and forests.
