Hiking
The hiking trail from Poženik near Cerklje na Gorenjskem to Šenturška Gora is popular with hikers, especially during the Christmas and New Year period. It follows a well-trodden, vehicle-worn cart track that was once the main link between the two villages. The starting point is at the end of the village of Poženik. At first the path climbs steeply to a chapel, then levels out.
During this festive period, local residents set up numerous nativity scenes along the path, depicting the humble circumstances of Jesus’s birth. In 2023, visitors counted more than 80 nativity scenes, and by Christmas their number had risen to around 100. The nativity scenes are placed in imaginative spots in nature, such as tree hollows, under roots, beneath rocks and in caves, giving visitors a unique experience of the festive atmosphere in a natural setting.
Along the path there is also a chapel with an image of Mary Help of Christians (Marija Pomagaj), where hikers can ring the bell for good health and a safe journey.
For safety reasons, it is advisable to walk this trail in daylight, as landslides are possible in certain places and can damage the path. Parents should take particular care of children, as there are steep drops below the path in some places.
We recommend suitable hiking gear, including good footwear and hiking poles, especially in winter conditions.
Walking the trail from Poženik to Šenturška Gora during the festive season offers a unique experience combining nature, culture and spirituality, further enriched by the nativity scenes so carefully set up by local residents.
