Monuments and memorials
In the centre of Cerklje, next to Hribar Villa, is the Memorial Park of Notable Figures, dedicated to people whose work left an important mark on Cerklje and on Slovenian cultural and social life.
The park opened in 1999, on the 80th anniversary of the death of Ignacij Borštnik. His bust was the first in the park, and busts of other important figures were added later. Today the park has six busts, all by the sculptor Eva Tršar Andlovic.
The park honours Ignacij Borštnik (1858–1919), actor, director and founder of Slovenian professional theatre; Fran Barle (1864–1928), one of the most important organisers of the Slovenian fire service; Andrej Vavken (1838–1898), teacher, organist and composer; Franc Kimovec (1878–1964), priest and church composer; Janez Čebulj (1832–1898), missionary; and Janez Mežan (1897–1972), painter and art teacher.
The Memorial Park brings together in one place the stories of people who came from Cerklje or whose life and work left their mark on the town. Together they form part of the cultural and historical identity of Cerklje.
