Wayside shrines

About

At crossroads and along roads and paths stand simple architectural monuments – wayside shrines (znamenja). They mark events, petitions or vows, and can also show the way. They may take the form of a stone pillar, a wooden cross, a masonry column or even a small chapel with a painted fresco.

  • The plague shrine of 1645 stands beneath the “vicarage lime tree” and is an example of a simple pillar shrine.
  • Antoč’s shrine on Šenturška Gora no longer has its original appearance, but the pillar design of the 16th-century shrine has survived. The Češnjevek village shrine, the Deva shrine and the fully painted Mušč shrine in Zgornji Brnik, as well as the Grošelj and

Šlebir shrines in Zalog, are among the shrines of Baroque design, with more elaborate architecture and paintings.

  • Chapel-shaped shrines use a simplified form of church architecture with an open interior containing an altar table and a statue of a saint. This group includes the chapel in Stiška vas, the Hribušek chapel and the Kral chapel in Grad.
