This year, as every year, we have put up protective barriers along the problem stretches of road to hold amphibians back at the roadside during their migration towards the ponds. For them to reach the water safely, volunteers need to be out on site every day to pick up the amphibians along the barriers and carry them safely across the road.
The volunteer campaign has been running since 2021, has been repeated every year and lasts from February to March. Would you like to join in? Follow our events calendar – here
We invite everyone who would like to help to join the campaign and to pass the information on.
How does the campaign work?
The campaign is not organised as a conventional event but as volunteer help out in the field. This means that you:
- come to the location,
- walk along the barriers,
- pick up the amphibians,
- carry them safely to the pond,
- count the animals you have carried across,
- report the numbers,
- and head home with a good feeling.
We go out every day from 18.00 onwards, when the amphibians begin their journey towards the ponds.
More rain and higher temperatures mean more amphibians and a greater need for volunteers.
What is important?
- We collect the amphibians along the barriers (they come from the woods towards the ponds).
- Report the number of amphibians you have carried across (toads, brown frogs, newts, mating pairs carried across). This data is essential for monitoring the state of the populations and planning further measures.
- Participation is at your own risk.
- Required equipment: a high-visibility vest, a torch and a bucket.
- You are responsible for your own safety and the safety of any children. Participation without a high-visibility vest is not permitted.
Thank you to everyone who helps to protect our natural environment.
We look forward to your support in the field.
