New on our shelf: IVAN SIVEC, Vse generalove skrivnosti (All the General’s Secrets)
With the help of two renowned Slovenian historians, Assist. Prof. Dr Miha Šimec and Dr Rajmund Lampreht, the writer Ivan Sivec reveals the previously unknown yet exceptionally important story of the Slovenian hero Jernej Basaj (1719-1784). In the form of a biographical novel, he guides us through the details of Basaj’s life, from his peasant origins to his remarkable rise to become the first Slovenian general. Until this novel was published, only a few lines had ever been written about Basaj, but drawing on scholarly work and his own heartfelt research into the past, the author presents his thorny path in detail.
The novel takes us into the lively military world of the eighteenth century, where military adventures intertwine with Basaj’s emotionally charged personal story. It stretches from his first foolish love and his carefree youth to the start of his military career, his marriage and, finally, his death – both of which take place in the embrace of his sworn brother, Peter Pavel Glavar. In this way the author conjures up an exceptional story that goes beyond mere military events and draws us deep into the intimate world of Jernej Basaj.
