Lace-makers and artists will once again be creating at Davorin Jenko Primary School in Cerklje
Following the recent natural disaster, the members of the Lastovke Cerklje bobbin lace group and the art section of the Cerklje Pensioners’ Association unexpectedly lost their creative space at Davorin Jenko Primary School. Until the end of the year, however, they were offered a new creative home at Petrovc House in Cerklje. The school premises have since been repaired, so you can once again find them there.
Every Monday from 17:30 to 19:30 you can step into the world of lace-making with the Lastovke Cerklje group. Its members create wonderful works of art from lace and, better still, you can join them and learn this wonderful craft yourself. Let us not forget that Slovenian bobbin lace-making is registered as an important element of intangible cultural heritage.
Bobbin lace-making is the craft of making lace by hand through the repeated twisting and crossing of threads that run from bobbins wound with thread to a pattern pinned to a pillow. For this creative activity you need bobbins, a pillow in a woven basket or on a wooden stand, a paper pattern, thread, pins, a crochet hook, small scissors and a winder for winding thread onto the bobbins. Lace can be made from a variety of materials, including linen and cotton threads, natural silk, wool, synthetic fibres and even metal threads. Besides its traditional uses, such as decorating clothing and church and household textiles, lace is also popular today as a fashion accessory and wall decoration. It inspires artistic creation in the worlds of fashion, design and architecture. Bobbin lace-making is also an important social building block of intergenerational connection and has therapeutic effects.
Every Wednesday from 17:00 to 19:00 you can watch the artists of the art section of the Cerklje Pensioners’ Association at work. It is an excellent opportunity to see their artistic creativity and perhaps find inspiration for your own artistic expression.
We are delighted that Petrovc House in Cerklje became something of a centre of art and creativity for a short while. You are warmly invited to join this wonderful community and discover the rich world of bobbin lace-making and fine art. Let us not forget that preserving these traditions means preserving our cultural heritage, which will continue to inspire us for many generations to come.
