Quality of life in the Alps – tell us what you think!

Life in the Alps has always had its advantages and disadvantages. Factors contributing to poorer living conditions in the Alps certainly include the mountainous terrain, dispersed settlement, the closure of services such as health clinics, shops and schools, and inadequate public transport. As holder of the Presidency of the Alpine Convention in 2023–2024, the Slovenian Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning has recognised this issue in the area and is therefore devoting the 10th Report on the State of the Alps to quality of life. We understand the concept of quality of life as the living and material conditions that residents need for their livelihood and well-being in a given area, together with their subjective perception of these conditions. The aim of the report is to deepen knowledge of the quality of life of people in the Alps by identifying and taking into account spatial differences. The report will be prepared by the University of Ljubljana with the support of the Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention and an ad hoc international working group set up by the Alpine Convention specifically for this purpose.

As one of our methods of gathering information, we have also chosen a questionnaire survey, as we believe it is essential to find out what residents think about their quality of life and to focus on their related needs. We will disseminate the survey through various channels in the Alpine countries, mostly with the help of the working group members and other stakeholders from the area, such as local communities. Based on the data collected, we will prepare an analysis for the Alpine region and recommendations for decision-makers at local, regional and national level on adopting measures to help improve the quality of life of the people of the Alps.

For more information, please see the Alpine Convention website: link (opens in a new tab).

We invite everyone aged 15 and over to take part in the survey at: https://1ka.arnes.si/slo (opens in a new tab), which is open until 31 July 2023.

Thank you in advance for taking part and for your personal contribution to the report.
