How do residents experience tourism in Cerklje?

At the Cerklje Tourism Board, we want to develop tourism in a way that contributes to quality of life, preserves nature and local identity, and brings benefits to the local community. That is why in 2025 we carried out a residents’ survey to find out how local people perceive tourism in our destination.

How we monitored satisfaction

The survey was carried out in 2025. A total of 345 residents took part, which is a good sample for gaining an insight into the views of the local community. Most participants were employed (76%), the 25–64 age group predominated, and 67% of participants were women. Only 12% of respondents have a direct economic link to tourism, so the results largely reflect the wider opinion of residents.

Key findings

  • Residents mostly perceive tourism in the destination positively, especially in terms of the benefits for the local community and the preservation of culture.
  • The negative impacts of tourism (health, safety, overcrowding) are rated low, which shows that tourism does not currently place a significant burden on quality of life.
  • The main challenge that emerges is the feeling among residents that they have too few opportunities to take part in planning the development of tourism, as well as a moderate level of awareness of tourism development and green activities.
  • The perception of green tourism development is moderate, which means that activities do exist but are not always sufficiently visible or clearly presented to residents.

What we will do next

We see the survey results as an important starting point for improvements. In the coming period, we are committed to involving residents more systematically in decision-making on tourism development, in particular through regular updates, gathering suggestions and including representatives of the local community in discussions on the key guidelines for the sustainable development of the destination.

Why this matters

Tourism is successful when it is good for both visitors and local people. By monitoring residents’ satisfaction, we want to ensure that tourism development remains balanced, sustainable and in line with local needs.
