2026 Road European Championships to pass through Cerklje na Gorenjskem too

Between 2 and 7 October 2026, Slovenia will host the UEC Road European Championships, the largest cycling event in the country’s history. Cerklje na Gorenjskem will be among the municipalities included on the championship routes.

On Monday, 18 May 2026, the routes of the European Championships, which will bring top female and male cyclists from all over Europe to Slovenia, were presented at Ljubljana Castle. Over five days of competition, 14 races will be held, featuring around 800 riders from more than 50 countries, accompanied by a large number of technical and support staff.

The championships will connect Ljubljana with several municipalities and towns in Gorenjska (Upper Carniola), including Cerklje na Gorenjskem. The routes will run through the Ljubljana area, Gorenjska and the surroundings of Šenčur, and a key part of the racing will be the demanding final circuit with the climb to Možjanca above Preddvor. This very climb will be one of the crucial sections where the most important races of the championships could be decided.

The official website of the championships also lists Cerklje na Gorenjskem among the places involved in the event. This means that the municipality will be part of the wider story of the European Championships, which in October 2026 will put Slovenia, Gorenjska and the places along the routes in the international sporting spotlight.

A great opportunity to raise the profile of Cerklje and Krvavec

The inclusion of Cerklje na Gorenjskem in such a major sporting event is an important opportunity to promote the municipality as an active, green and sports-oriented destination. With Krvavec close by, its varied landscape, cycling climbs, country roads and starting points for active experiences, Cerklje offers excellent conditions for developing sports and cycling tourism.

The European Championships will attract numerous visitors, sports enthusiasts, teams, media and support staff to Slovenia. For the places along the routes, this means exceptional international exposure, as well as an opportunity to showcase their local produce, natural assets, food and drink, cultural heritage and opportunities for active leisure to visitors.

Slovenia as a cycling nation

Hosting the European Championships confirms Slovenia’s outstanding reputation in world cycling. In recent years, the successes of Slovenian cycling champions have contributed significantly to the country’s profile as a cycling destination, and the 2026 championships will bring this story to home roads as well.

For Cerklje na Gorenjskem, this is an opportunity to put itself even more firmly on the map of destinations that welcome cyclists, athletes and lovers of active experiences. The event could provide an important boost to the further development of the local cycling offer, to cooperation between local providers and to the promotion of Krvavec and the wider area at the foot of the Alps.

More information in the coming months

More detailed information on the routes, traffic arrangements, accompanying activities and options for spectators will be announced in the coming months. The Municipality of Cerklje na Gorenjskem and the Cerklje Tourism Board will keep the public informed of all important information in good time.

The 2026 Road European Championships will thus also be an important sporting, tourism and promotional event for Cerklje na Gorenjskem, linking our town with the biggest cycling story in Slovenia.
