Pumpkins grown by Ciril Grilc weighed 1,400 kilograms

On the farm of Jelka and Ciril Grilc in Trata pri Velesovem, known locally as Pr’ Tratarju, they have been growing pumpkins as animal fodder for several years. Last year the heaviest pumpkin weighed 150 kilograms, and this year as much as 176 kilograms. The other nine pumpkins weighed between 110 and 148 kilograms. According to Ciril, he fertilised the field only with farmyard manure and never uses artificial fertiliser on his pumpkins; the weather was not particularly favourable for pumpkin growth, and he obtained the seed from a well-known pumpkin grower. This year he also grew edible butternut squash and muscat pumpkins. As the traditional event announcing the heaviest farm produce was not held in Cerklje na Gorenjskem this year because of the epidemic, Ciril gave away most of the pumpkins and set some aside as animal fodder. In his free time, Ciril also makes wooden bowls and cups from various types of wood.

At the beginning of September, members of the KUD Pod lipo Adergas cultural society held the traditional ‘Pod vaško lipo’ (Under the Village Lime Tree) gathering outdoors at Pr’ Tratarju, in compliance with the safety guidelines. KUD Pod lipo Adergas members David Puškarič and Aljaž Ribnikar performed a sketch about the use of face masks written by Angelca Maček, and also taking part were the band Sirc, reciters and the youth choir from Adergas led by Nancy Sirc. Ciril Grilc also put together an interesting exhibition of photographs of the šranga wedding barriers (a traditional wedding custom) and wedding couples in Adergas over the past thirty years.
