Ignacij Borštnik, the founder of Slovenian professional theatre and the first Slovenian professional stage actor, was born in Cerklje na Gorenjskem on 1 July 1858.
The leading Slovenian theatre festival in Maribor is named after him; it presents the highest Slovenian theatre awards and prizes, including, since 1970, the Borštnik Ring, the highest award for lifetime achievement.
In September, on the anniversary of his death, Cerklje celebrates its municipal holiday.
