Do you know who invented the “selfie”?
Highlights from the exhibition and recital marking the 210th anniversary of the birth of Janez Puhar, the first Slovenian photographer, inventor and poet
He invented photography on glass, with which he created several self-portraits.
Besides his achievements in photography, Janez Puhar (1814–1864) wrote poetry in Slovene and German, sang and played several instruments, some of which he even made himself. During his career – he was a priest by profession – he lived in ten places around Slovenia.
He was transferred to Cerklje, where he served between 1853 and 1862. Here he met intellectuals who were active in music – Andrej Vavken, Leopold Cvek, Gregor Rihar, Kamilo Mašek and others – which awakened his poetic streak, and his poems were set to music for the first time. At the same time, he continued to take photographs and experiment with new processes.
All of Janez Puhar’s surviving photographic heritage dates from the time he lived in Cerklje. This is why the Cerklje period is regarded as the most creative time of Puhar’s all-too-short life.
