Visit to the Globočnik blacksmith's workshop

About

Visit a traditional blacksmith's workshop in Cerklje whose origins date back to 1887. The workshop was built by the blacksmith Matija Likar and later bought by Janez Globočnik.

History and heritage

The ancestors of the Globočnik family were known for making meadow harrows, shoeing horses, building horse-drawn carts and providing other blacksmithing services. After a fire in 1985, the workshop was rebuilt, and in 1998 it was fully refurbished. Today, the family forge combines more than a century of blacksmithing tradition with modern approaches and metal design.

Tradition and modern blacksmithing

Today, the workshop produces items such as wrought-iron fences and gates, window grilles, wrought-iron furniture, small decorative ironwork and other made-to-order pieces.

The family tradition is also carried on by Jaka Globočnik, who created the JG Metalmorph brand. In his work, he combines classic blacksmithing techniques with contemporary metal design, creating unique sculptures and other artistic metal pieces.

A unique experience

During your visit to the blacksmith's workshop, you will learn about the history of blacksmithing and the Globočnik family tradition, and see work in a real blacksmith's workshop up close.

A special part of the experience is a demonstration of how a horseshoe is made – one of the oldest and most recognisable blacksmithing skills.

What to expect

  • a demonstration of horseshoe making using the traditional method,
  • a guided tour of the blacksmith's workshop and an introduction to the history of the blacksmithing craft of the

Globočnik family,

  • a look at the masterpieces and unique metal pieces made in the workshop today.
