Petrovc House – Pr' Petrovc

About

In the centre of Cerklje stands Petrovc House, known locally as Pr’ Petrovc, one of the most characteristic old houses in the town. Until the mid-18th century it was a small wooden farmhouse; it was then enlarged and rebuilt as an imposing masonry building with a rich façade and frescoes. It acquired its present appearance in the mid-19th century, as recalled by the year 1863 carved above the stone portal. Over time the house was home to many activities – from farming and carting to the timber and wine trade and hospitality. It once housed an inn known far and wide, and one of its owners was Andrej Murnik, a successful businessman and long-serving mayor of Cerklje. Because of him, some locals also called it the Mayor’s House.

The Municipality of Cerklje na Gorenjskem bought the house in 2005 and restored it thoroughly under conservation supervision. It reopened to the public in 2010, and the restoration preserved its characteristic historic appearance.

Today Pr’ Petrovc is an important cultural and social centre of Cerklje. It is home to the Cerklje Tourist Information Centre, the Cerklje local library and a gallery, which hosts various exhibitions and other cultural events throughout the year.
